What to Know

Critics Consensus

Florence Foster Jenkins makes poignant, crowd-pleasing dramedy out of its stranger-than-fiction tale -- and does its subject justice with a reliably terrific turn from star Meryl Streep.

Nov 4, 2021 Full Review Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Kate Erbland indieWire That's where the film truly succeeds: Frears doesn't treat Florence like a joke, and neither does Streep. Rated: B- Jan 2, 2017 Full Review Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Mark Kennedy Associated Press Streep, of course, fills her character with emotion, humanity and need, but director Stephen Frears and writer Nicholas Martin haven't decided whether their movie is slapstick or tragedy. Sep 19, 2016 Full Review Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Edward Porter Sunday Times (UK) Meryl Streep gives a simple but glorious performance, showing that her many talents include a gift for deliberate bad singing. Mar 21, 2023 Full Review Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Brian T. Carney Washington Blade Florence Foster Jenkins found not only the obvious comedy but an unexpected tenderness in the tale of a tone-deaf diva (Meryl Streep), her supportive husband (Hugh Grant) and her gay accompanist (Simon Helberg). Dec 21, 2022 Full Review Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It’s a veritable stew of comedy, drama, and commentary. Weighty Connected L The incredible performances of Hugh Grant, Simon Helberg and Meryl Streep as the titular character, who was a famous soprano singer known for her very poor singing, make this 2016 biographical film an entertaining and touching story of a woman's dream without the talent of achieving and yet she did in a strange kind of way. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/17/24 Full Review Patricia F Charmingly depicts a different angle of the 40s unlike what we're used to seeing. Singing off-pitch on purpose is a talent in itself, and Meryl Streep was of course up to the challenge. Simon Helberg perfectly casted as Cosmé, despite argument from some that it was hard to shake off good ol' Howie. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review Alec B Thankfully, the movie is not what it's delusional ad campaign promised. Outside of that, it's charming if a little repetitive. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/23 Full Review T M Entertaining in spite of cringe worthy singing! Amazing its based on a true story. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/07/23 Full Review Sanja S Wonderful performances by the main cast. Entertaining and moving. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/30/23 Full Review S R Fascinating story, but how far can you take it? Good cast made this believable and fun. It took me awhile, but I finally finished it after seeing only half of it a year ago. It was on Amazon and Pluto.
