Checking and Replacing Fuses

Fuses and circuit breakers protect your vehicle’s electrical system from overloading. If electrical parts in your vehicle are not working, the system may have been overloaded and blown a fuse or tripped a circuit breaker. Before you replace or repair any electrical parts, check the appropriate fuses or circuit breakers.

To check a fuse, look at the silver-colored band inside the fuse. If the band is broken or melted, replace the fuse.

  • Before replacing fuses check that the key has been removed from the ignition and that all the services are switched off and/or disengaged.
  • Always disconnect the battery before servicing high current fuses.
  • Always replace a fuse with one that has the specified amperage rating. Using a fuse with a higher amperage rating can cause severe wire damage and could start a fire.
  • Never replace a broken fuse with anything other than a new fuse. Use always an intact fuse of the same color.
  • To reduce the risk of electrical shock, always replace the cover to the power distribution box before reconnecting the battery or refilling fluid reservoirs.
  • If a fuse blows again contact a qualified service center.

Passenger Compartment Fuse Box

The fuse panel is on the right-hand side of the passenger footwell behind a trim panel.

Pull the panel toward you and swing it out away from the side to remove the trim panel. To reinstall it, line up the tabs with the grooves on the panel, then push it shut.

Press in the tabs on both sides of the cover, then pull the fuse box cover off to remove it. To reinstall the fuse box cover, place the top part of the cover on the fuse panel, then push the bottom part of the cover until you hear it click shut. Gently pull on the cover to make sure it is seated properly.

Where is the fuse interior fuse box? ›

Usually, you will find two fuse boxes in the car. One is located under the hood and the other is found in the dashboard or near the steering wheel.

Where is the interior fuse box on a 2018 f250? ›

The fuse panel is in the right-hand side of the passenger footwell behind a trim panel. To remove the trim panel, pull it toward you and swing it away from the side.

Where is blown fuse located? ›

Typically, fuse boxes are located in basem*nts, garages, laundry rooms, and attics. If you have trouble finding your fuse box, check the utility meter outside your home. Try to follow the wire that leads from the meter. Fuse boxes and circuit breakers are usually located near where power enters the house.

How to tell if a fuse or relay is bad? ›

Listen for an audible click as the electromagnetic coil activates and the internal switch closes. Switch your multimeter to continuity mode, listen for the audible beep, and test for continuity between the switch pins. If there's no beep, it means the switch pins are stuck open and your relay is faulty.

Can AutoZone help with fuses? ›

Have a blown fuse? We can help. AutoZone carries a fantastic selection of car fuses and electrical repair components to get you back on your way fast.

Where is the secondary fuse box? ›

In most cases, the main fuse box is situated under the hood, near the battery, while secondary panels can be found in the passenger compartment, often hidden behind a removable panel.

How to reset BCM on Ford F150? ›

Just remove both cables from the battery and touch the ends of the cables together to bleed off the voltage stored in the BCM capacitors, which resets the BCM's memory and erases trash data. The original programming is non-volatile and will always remain.

What fuse controls your interior lights? ›

The fuse that you're looking for will usually be the “lights” fuse, although it can differ from one vehicle to the next. The only way to know for sure is to locate a wiring diagram for the specific make, model, and year of your car, but checking out all of the fuses labeled “lights” or similar is usually good enough.

How to reset fuse box? ›

The tripped circuit breaker will be in the “off” position or in a middle position between “on” and “off.” Reset the Breaker: Move the breaker to the full “off” position and then back to “on.” That should clear an overload and return power to the room.

Where is the fuse box located in a truck? ›

Most vehicles have two fuse boxes, with one under the hood and the other in the cabin. You can usually find the other fuse box in the dashboard on the driver's side, but some manufacturers also place it below the glove box. If the interior fuse box isn't there, you can try checking the luggage compartment.
