Marvel:10 Best Swords In X Of Swords (2024)

The innovative and mysterious revitalization of the X-Men by Jonathan Hickman and company with the Dawn of X storyline escalates this fall with the epic X Of Swords crossover. Not much is known about the story at the moment, except for that it involves a lot of swords. A lot.

Just about every major sword ever wielded in the pages of an X-Book is making some kind of appearance, along with quite a few new ones it seems. If there is anything cooler than X-Men, it's X-Men with swords, so here are the ten best swords from X Of Swords.

10 Nightcrawler's Rapier

Tried and true, Nightcrawler has been using a sword since nearly the beginning of his comic book career. His swashbuckling spirit demanded the use of a rapier and from his '80s limited series on, it's never been too far from his hands. Of all the swords teased in X Of Swords, it's certainly the least powerful, but any sword in the hands of Kurt Wagner is deadly. With his expert fencing skills and ability to teleport,Nightcrawler isa force to be reckoned with in the battle ahead.

9 Cypher's Techno-Organic Sword

Cypher is, well, a cypher at this point. So is his techno-organic sword, a product it seems of his expanding -worryingly so - Phalanx-based powers. Doug Ramsey once died, but came back, and now is essential thanks to his unique ability to communicate with Krakoa. But his right arm, covered in a Phalanx-sleeve, represents a troubling bit of uncertainty in the relatively assured reality on Krakoa. This sword could draw the otherwise gentle Doug further from his roots, and poison others with an alien virus.

8 The Spaceknight Sword

Cable - or Kid Cable, as this younger version is sometimes known - is pretty much all about guns. Lots and lots of guns. So it's a bit strange to see him in recent issues of his comic book wielding a giant anime-style sword. The sword belongs to a Spaceknight, which may sound familiar to fans of '80s toys. The Spaceknights once included Rom, and remain part of Marvel continuity despite some confusing licensing issues. Evidently Cable always wanted a huge sword (actually he says he did) so he keeps it.

7 Sword of Might

Marvel:10 Best Swords In X Of Swords (4)

The Sword of Might dates back to Captain Britain #1 and is a fairly major piece of mythology from an alternate reality of Otherworld. Otherworld seems set to play a substantial role in X Of Swords, having been a key setting in the early issues of Excalibur and the focus of Apocalypse's many and mysterious plans.

Consequently, the Sword of Might figures to factor as well. The choice between the sword and the Amulet of Right serves as a test to all who would be Captain Britain. Brian Braddock initially turned it down but may face the same test again.

6 Captain Britain'sPsi-Blade

Another sword very important to Captain Britain, at least the current one, is the Psi-Blade. Betsy Braddock is a hugely powerful telepath who can manifest her power in the form of a dagger, sword, and shield. Any of them can overload the nervous system of any person she strikes with them, incapacitating them without killing them. Betsy's role as Captain Britain has faced several early tests thanks to the battle over Otherworld, and it doesn't look like it's getting any easier.

5 Muramasa Blade

It's not like Wolverine needs a sword, but he's got one of the more interesting ones in the Marvel universe. The Muramasa blade dates back to pre-World War II Japan. At the time, Wolverine south revenge for the murder of his lover. The guy responsible healed as good as Logan did, so Logan needed something a little more to the point. Japanese swordsmith Muramasa infused the sword with some of Wolverine's own soul to give it that extra oomph, and well, it worked.

4 The Twilight Sword

The Twilight Sword is one of the most mysterious objects in X Of Swords, for many reasons. This sword evidently tore the original island that became Krakoa and Arrako in two, and it might be - just might be - the same Twilight Sword that Marvel fans have seen before. Longtime fans of Thor will likely recognize that Surtur once created and used a Twilight Sword to try and destroy Asgard back during Walt Simonson's legendary run. Are they one and the same?

3 Cerebro Sword

Marvel:10 Best Swords In X Of Swords (8)

The Cerebro sword is a very new addition to the expansive Marvel armory, but it's likely a very critical one. Magneto collected the shattered fragments of the then dead Professor X's Cerebro helmet and reforged them into a sword, as a stark reminder that their peace on Krakoa wasn't inviolate.

2 Blade of the Phoenix

Marvel:10 Best Swords In X Of Swords (9)

The Phoenix Force, like Cerebro, doesn't need a weapon so it is equally cool and terrifying that both have been fashioned into them. The sword dates back to 2007, but really the beginning of the Shi'ar Empire, when the aliens defeated an early Phoenix host with a sword that then became infused with the power of the Phoenix. Later on, someone tried to use it against Rachel Summers, which big mistake. Rachel and the sword both apparently lost their connection to the Phoenix Force but with its return, perhaps the cosmic power will as well.

1 Soul Sword

Marvel:10 Best Swords In X Of Swords (10)

The Soul Sword is likely one of the most understood weapons at play in the upcoming crossover. In the hands of Magik, the sword renders her ruler of the demonic dimension Limbo (and considering that it's been teased that Madeleine Pryor is coming back... that could get interesting). She can also teleport, defeat just about any magic somebody throws at her, and oh yeah, bruise people's souls. This sword will be a major component in however Swords of X goes down.
