What is the new NFL playoff bracket format? ›

The NFL expanded its current playoff format to 14 teams in 2020. Seven teams from the AFC and seven from the NFC will make up the field. The previous system saw six teams from each conference qualify. Now, three wildcard teams will join the four divisional winners.

Every year, 14 of the NFL's 32 teams make the playoffs. And on average, only about half of them return the following year. The other half are replaced, with something like six new contenders on an annual basis.
