Education Program

APWA knows the challenges and opportunities facing public works are unprecedented. The speed of social and technological change places an enormous responsibility on you to proactively provide and maintain the infrastructure needed for your community’s growth and well-being.

You need a PWX experience that will help you gain new perspectives, exchange ideas, and participate in important and thought-provoking discussions on the shape of things to come.

And that’s APWA's goal for what you’ll experience through the PWX Education Program this year. You will be able to make meaningful connections and discover and produce game-changing insights and solutions.

We need you to arrive in Atlanta prepared to ask essential questions and share your views and ideas. Start thinking now about:

  • What challenge(s) are you facing for which a solution seems out of reach?
  • What leadership qualities, skills, and resources are needed to lead and manage the modern public works department?
  • What innovations and solutions has your agency implemented that would help the whole profession provide better public works services?
  • What are your blind spots? Are you open to fresh and broader perspectives?
  • What is your vision for the future of public works?
  • Can innovation be learned?
  • What’s coming? Do you have any hunches or visions for what the next technological advancement will be?
  • How should we be providing public works infrastructure and services that are resilient and sustainable?
  • Don’t stop there—what else is on your mind? We’re counting on you to show up eager to ask questions and join your colleagues in imagining the future your communities deserve!

APWA is committed to helping you learn from each other, and the PWX 2024 Education Program will include opportunities for you to make intentional connections.

We will still cover the basic public works interest areas, including leadership, professional development, emergency planning and response, streets/roads construction and maintenance, traffic engineering and active transportation solutions, engineering and technology, water/wastewater, stormwater, fleet services, solid waste management, facilities construction and maintenance, grounds maintenance and urban forestry, sustainability and resiliency, and utility and right-of-way management.

And don’t worry—for those of you wanting more structured learning, we’ll still have plenty of traditional conference offerings, BUT you will be encouraged to step outside of the box, too. APWA strives to bring you cutting-edge education and the tools you'll need to mobilize the collective wisdom of the public works profession.

PWX will evolve with each succeeding year. In 2024, we will try out more new formats and continue experimenting with other trending ideas based on your feedback and recommendations.

Call for Presentations—PWX 2025

The PWX 2025 Call for Presentations will open in early July 2024.

CEU Credits

.1 CEU = 1 PDH (Professional Development Hour)

CEU vs. PDH

APWA is an International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) Authorized Provider of CEUs. This designation demonstrates that APWA’s Continuing Education programs comply with recognized standards for program development and learning outcomes and are recognized by multiple state licensing boards and certifying bodies. The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a nationally accepted measure of participation in continuing education activities. It is a valuable tool for showing employers and professional licensing authorities that you are adding new skills and staying current with today’s ever-changing workplace.

The Professional Development Hour (PDH) is a term established by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) “Continuing Professional Competency Guidelines” for Professional Engineers (PE). In these guidelines, NCEES defines the equivalency between CEUs and PDHs as: 0.1 CEU (1 hour of instruction) = 1 PDH. (Important note to Florida and New York Professional Engineers: APWA is an approved Florida Board of Professional Engineers provider of Continuing Education. The State of New York recognizes APWA as an approved training provider by virtue of APWA’s standing as an IACET Authorized Provider of CEUs.)

CEU Eligible Sessions

APWA’s education sessions, workshops, Learning Technical Tours, and exhibit showcase presentations are eligible for CEU credit. Your registration covers the processing fee. General sessions are not eligible for CEU credit.

Pro tip: If learning objectives are listed for the session, CEUs will be awarded.

CEU Tracking and Processing

APWA uses an electronic system called RFID to track attendance at education sessions. The PWX name badge code contains identifying information specific to each person. To obtain CEUs for the sessions you attend, you must wear your badge and enter and exit the session via the designated door. Your badge will automatically be scanned upon entry/exit. A timestamp for arrival and departure will be logged. You must attend the entire session or workshop to be eligible to receive CEU credits.

CEUs from PWX will be processed and added to your APWA CEU Transcript within six–eight weeks of the conference. After processing, you will receive an email containing instructions for downloading your CEU Transcript. The fee for obtaining a CEU Transcript is included in your PWX full and daily registration fees!
