President's Page
I would like to thank the membership of the Arkansas Genealogical Society for their continued support the past year. In 2004 the AGS board initiated several changes which we hope will benefit members. This board of directors is enthusiastic and committed to bringing quality publications and educational opportunities to the membership. Much work is accomplished between each of the quarterly board meetings.
The Arkansas Family Historian has a new look and the publications committee welcomes new unpublished material. If you have not submitted a query or an article, you are encouraged to do so. If you have a photograph to accompany your article, it might be used on the cover for that issue. Do you have a mystery photograph? We welcome those too.
The AGS Spring Workshop will be held April 9, 2005, with Pam Boyer Porter as out guest speaker. She is a dynamic and knowledgeable genealogical lecturer. Read about Pam and the Spring Workshop in this issue. The AGS board is committed to bringing you two quality events a year and 2005 is no exception. The Fall Conference will be held October 21-22, 2005.
The Priors Volume 3, both book and CD, will be published in the spring. The Volume 2 CD is sold out, but Volume I and 2 books are still available. We are in the second printing of Russell Baker's revised editions of the Arkansas Township Atlas, 1819-1 930 and Arkansas Post Offices: From Memdag to Norsk, A Historical Directory, 1832-1 990. Both books are invaluable when it comes to doing Arkansas research.
In this issue there is an entry form with instructions for entering the Family History Writing Contest. The AGS board voted unanimously to designate the first place prize as the "Bobbie Jones McLane Award," This is in recognition of Bobbie's years of service to this society and her contribution to family history writing.
AGS has had a booth at two major conferences this year, NGS-GenTech in St. Louis, Missouri, and the FGS Conference in Austin, Texas. I would like to say a special thanks to board member Rita Anderson who did a wonderful job running the AGS booth in Austin. Rita volunteered on very short notice after Gloria Futrell broke her foot. .
By the time you read this, some of our members will have participated in the first AGS sponsored trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. I am sure there will be some great research stories to report in the March Historian.
Regards, Jan Hearn Davenport, President Arkansas Genealogical Society

Letters
My wife, Elna Jo (Wright) Haga, was a member of the Arkansas Genealogical Society. She was born 17 Nov 1932 in Pine Valley, OK, a lumber camp that I believe was on the OK! AR border. Her parents were both from a long line of AR ancestors, Ashley on mother's side, Wright on father's. She died 22 Aug 2004 of a heart attack in Kern Co., CA, on the way home from a trip to Southern California. We had been married 47 years and she died on our anniversary.
She had a genealogy book about ready to print in the word processor. I will complete publication of this book and see that you receive a free copy. In the meantime, you may cancel her subscription (no refund expected).

Queries and Submissions
Queries and other submissions to The Arkansas Family Historian may be emailed to [emailprotected]
or mailed to AGS, P. O. Box 17653, Little Rock, AR 72222. Submitters should indicate the sources of their material.
Membership
Even though we reduced the cost of printing the quarterly publications this year, the $20 dues left very little to support activities and educational projects. Therefore, the AGS Board
159
voted to increase the individual membership dues to $25 per year.
A new method of maintaining the membership information has also been initiated that will allow more flexibility in the membership year. Membership will begin when the dues are received and the member will receive all AGS periodicals for the next year. A reminder will be sent when dues are payable.
The dues are: Individual $25; Household, $35; Foreign $35; Patron $100. The board voted to discontinue new Life memberships. The existing Life memberships will continue to be honored.
Corrections
In the September issue of AFH, in the list of Surnames Researched, a submitter's address was wrong. The address of submitter number 9 on page 136 should read: Darlene Jackson Hofer, 20910 South Amber Willow Trail, Cypress, TX 77433-5999, email:[emailprotected]. Darlene researches the name STOKES in Clay Co.
In the same issue, inside the back cover was a map of Arkansas during the Civil War showing cities, roads and rivers. The title at the top of the page read "Arkansas Territory 1861-65"; it should have read simply "Arkansas 1861-65".

FROM SOUTH CAROLINA SAND HILLS TO ARKANSAS MOUNTAINS THE STORY OF THE MCMILLAN FAMILY
By Russell P. Baker, 6525 Magnolia Dr., Mabelvale, AR 72103 [emailprotected]
This is the story of the life and travels of John McMillan and his family. According to his Civil War military service record, John was born in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, about 1822.1 So far, the names of his parents and other members of his family remain a mystery. Since he was functionally illiterate, he may have been born in humble circumstances.2 However, his fortunes took a tum for the better about 1840 when he married Rebecca F. Campbell. 3
Rebecca, born about 1823, was a local girl who had property.4 According to the 1880 census, her father was born in Scotland and her mother in North Carolina.5 By 1850 John and Rebecca were the parents of five children: Robert C. born in 1841, Daniel David C. born in 1843, Hugh Frank born in 1846, Sarah Margaret born in 1847, and Virginia Jenny (Jincey Ann) born in July of 18496
On December 10, 1850, the state of South Carolina granted to John McMillan a tract of land in what is now the Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge in the south central part of Chesterfield County. The grant was composed of some 1,683 acres located on the high ground between the headwaters of Skippers Creek, Rattlesnake Creek and Finley's Mill Creek; the waters of Big Black Creek; and the Middle Prong of Rocky Creek. Although the records of Chesterfield County were destroyed during the Civil War, the land grant has survived in the South Carolina Archives. From it we know the names of John's neighbors. They were Duncan Campbell, Daniel Mcintire, "Mr. Hubbard", Henry BoaniBone and Margaret Campbell. In 1855, John received an additional grant for 376 acres of nearby land on the headwaters of Rocky Creek. Adjacent landowners were Henry Bone's estate, Peter McCaskill, "Mr. Thompson", and Duncan Campbell. There is circumstantial evidence to suggest that these Campbell neighbors were members of Rebecca's family.7 Shortly before the beginning of the Civil War, John and Rebecca decided to sell their Chesterfield County holdings and seek a new home on the western frontier. Perhaps the rumors of the coming hostilities played a part in this decision. It is also possible that John's very sandy

land, having already lost its initial fertility after several years of intense cultivation, was no longer sufficient to sustain the family's farming operation. Nevertheless, the McMilians chose a new home for themselves on the sandy rolling plains of south Arkansas' Columbia County not far from the Louisiana state line. By the time of the 1860 U. S. Census, they were living in Calhoun Township, just east of the county seat, Magnolia. Next door was another Chesterfield County native,Archibald Campbell, and his family.' Arch is a good candidate for another of Rebecca's kinsmen, perhaps an uncle.' By 1860 John and Rebecca were the parents of two additional children: Angus A., born in December of 1852, and my ancestor, Elizabeth Jane, born on February 10, 1859, shortly before the family left South Carolina. oo No evidence has been uncovered that John owned lands in Columbia County. Rather, it appears that he rented a farm of some one hundred acres, with twenty acres under cultivation." Perhaps, the McMilians had planned only a short stopover in south Arkansas before moving further west.
The impending war soon caught up with the McMilians in their new home in Arkansas. In May of 1861, responding to Jeff Davis' call for volunteers, John's older sons, Robert C. and Daniel David c., enlisted in Capt. Austin's Company of Columbia Guards." They entered the Confederate Army as privates in Company G of the 6th Arkansas Infantry, C.S.A. However, in November of 1861 Robert C. became so ill that he was discharged and sent back home." Tn the meantime, the patriarch of the family, John McMillan, also enlisted in the Confederate Army. At the age of about forty, he marched away from home on February 26, 1862. Left behind were his wife and younger children, including newly born twins, John T. "Willie" and Emma A." John served as a private in Company B of the 19th (Dockery's) Arkansas Infantry, C. S.A.
The Civil War was not kind to the McMillans. Hugh Frank is said to have tagged along with his older brothers as their unit marched to Little Rock in 1861. He died during the trek and was buried somewhere along the way. His place of burial is not known. Daniel David C. was wounded so severely at the battle of Shiloh, fought in April of 1862 on the banks of the Tennessee River near the Tennessee Mississippi state line, that he was "discharged" the day after the battle." However, family tradition maintains that he died on the way home. It is not known where he is buried." In June of 1862, Robert C., who had been living at home with his family recovering from an illness, was recuperated enough to re-enlist in the Confederate Army, this time in company A of the 33rd Arkansas Infantry. Early the next year he, too, was wounded.

He survived to return home but was so gravely crippled that he spent the remainder of his d I . 17 ays as a parap eglC.
The senior McMillan, with two sons already dead, served in the Confederate Army until March of 1863, when he was discharged for being "over the age of forty years." His severance pay consisted of$89.70 for his military service, his clothing allowance, and mileage back to his home. He also received a rare Confederate discharge "Certificate." In it, he is described as being five feet, one inch tall, of a fair complexion with blue eyes and light hair. He signed his receipt with his mark (X)."
After the war, the McMillan family, perhaps haunted by memories of the war's sad events, remained in Columbia County for only a year or so." Late in 1867, they joined a group of area residents who were moving to new homes in western Arkansas' Ouachita Mountains. The leader of the emigrants was Stephen P. Baker, a Columbia County planter," whose brother, Jonathan Baker, lived in the mountains near Amity, in Clark County. One of Stephen Baker's sons, recently married Patrick Henry Baker, a veteran of the Confederate Army, was looking for a more healthful climate for his wife, Mary Susan Smith Baker." She was suffering from tuberculosis, a disease that would eventually kill many members of the Baker family. The mountains offered pure, pine-scented mountain air and clean, abundant spring water, both thought to benefit victims of this dreaded disease.
The Baker colony settled on Rock Creek near its mouth with the Caddo River, just south of what is now Glenwood in Pike County. This was where the "Mountain Road" crossed the creek. The area was then in northern Clark County. Here Baker built a home, a mill, and later a general store. Baker founded the Rock Creek Post Office in 1868." Within a short while, a thriving village grew up. The other immigrant families, including the McMillans, settled nearby." Shortly after 1870, Robert C. McMillan opened Rock Creek's first general store.24
In 1874, Patrick Henry Baker's wife died, leaving him with several small children, including newly born twins. According to a family tradition, one morning about a year later, the thirty-year-old Baker was making his way to the family mill when he met a beautiful teenage girl with blue eyes and blond hair. She was Elizabeth McMillan, daughteroDohn and Rebecca McMillan. Atthough she was only sixteen at the time, it was love at first sight." On October 7, 1875, Patrick and Elizabeth were married. They became the parents of a number of children: Robert J., Patrick H. Jr., William T., Benjamin Franklin, Wallace W., Samuel J., DewittT.,

John McMillan died on February 27, 1879." His wife Rebecca was still alive in 1880. However, she was ill with chronic bronchitis" and died soon afterwards. Tradition maintains that they are both buried in the County Line Cemetery at Glenwood, although neither has a grave marker. Thus, the story of the Chesterfield County McMillan family ends in the mountains of western Arkansas.

Visiting the Old Bean-Carnahan Cemetery, Lincoln, Washington County, Arkansas
By Robert Keen
After about five or six VISitS to the old cemetery I thought that I should write a little article about it. It is located on the Vol Blevins farm, and they are charming people who have done a lot of work on the cemetery. In reviewing my notes I will try to set the record straight on this cemetery.
family had just arrived and did not have a survey done.
There are two Revolutionary soldiers buried here: John Carnahan and Jacob Pyeatte. It was said that John Carnahan had preached the first sermon in Arkansas some twenty years earlier near Little Rock. Jacob Pyeatte
The first person to be buried here was John Billingsley, who died on the way to Canehill. The wagon train was camped overnight near the Bethlehem Church and Cemetery. Mr. Billingsley died during the night, but the Bethlehem Church was Methodist, and the travelers, being Presbyterian, didn't want anything to do with them. Religion ran deep in those days. So his friends loaded Mr.
,--------------, was the patriarch of the
Billingsley into a wagon and hauled him on to Canehill for burial. This was the first burial in Washington County. It is ironic that John was the first person buried in this cemetery, while his sister Jane Carnahan was the first to be buried in the Bethlehem Cemetery.
Jane was the ex-wife of John Carnahan. John Carnahan divorced Jane after she joined the Methodist Church. He later married Mary Polly Pyeatte and they are both buried in Bean-Carnahan Cemetery. This cemetery was started as a family plot, and it was supposed to be on Carnahan land. But as it turned out, it was on the Mark Bean land. The mistake was made because the
Pyeatte family. These two, with their wives, have a rock wall around their graves.
The cemetery is a beautiful site. One is able to view Lincoln across the Mark Bean Springs and Bush Valley. There are numerous fields tones marking graves. Of fifty stones remaining the ones that are readable now are the following:
William Maxwell and his wife Anna Billingsley Maxwell, daughter of John Billingsley; John Carnahan, Revolutionary soldier; Jacob Pyeatte, Revolutionary soldier; John Billingsley 1772 - 1827.
It is ironic that John was the first to be buried there, and his daughter Anna Maxwell was the last in 1880.
This is truly a pioneer cemetery and the Blevins can be congratulated for cleaning it up. If anyone knows of any other persons buried there, let me know at [emailprotected].

Michael J. Dillon Bible Submitted by Rita Anderson and copied from the original Bible which is still in the
possession of the Dillon family. [emailprotected]
There are very few facts concerning the Dillon immigrant from Ireland that are presently known to this branch of the family. From researching census records, one is able to bring together a few ideas concerning Martin Dillon and his bride. Family traditions state that Martin came to the United States ahead of Mary in order to find a place for them to live. At this time it is unknown whether they married in Ireland or the United States. According to the 1900 census, Michael was born in August 1839 and probably immigrated to the United States after 1860. Due to a poor census copy, it is impossible for this writer to read the immigration information for Martin, but it appears that Mary may have immigrated in 1864 and had been in the United States for 36 years.' Their first United States census record occurs in Ohio in 1870. It lists two children, Michael, age 5 and Mary E. [Ellen], age six months, who were born in Ohio. This census also indicates that Martin and his wife Mary [A'Hearn?] were born in Ireland.' Still in Logan County, Ohio in 1880, the family included three more children: Elizabeth (6), Dennis J. (3), and Joanna (I).' By 1900 Martin, Mary and daughter Mary A. were living in Illinois, near or in Rankin, and Mary stated that she had given birth to nine children of which only five were living.'
In the same year, their first born, Michael, the head of this Arkansas line, with his wife Ruth [Prater] and sons lived at 419 Summit Avenue in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was a section foreman for the railroad with four children in the household: Leo M. [Michael], [John] William, Thomas P. [Paul], and James R. [Roland]. It appears that Michael and family moved from Ohio to Illinois between March 1891 and July 1893. They had been in Arkansas less than two years since James was born in Illinois in June 1898.' In 1910 Michael and family had moved from Summit Avenue to 2622 West Eleventh Street and Michael worked as Roadmaster (chief maintenance superintendent, one division) for the railroad. Ruth stated she had given birth to ten children of which only five were living, and they were all living at home.6 In 1920 Michael, Ruth and Nellie lived at 1000 Woodrow Street in Little Rock while son Roland and his wife, Cleo May, lived only a few doors away.' By 1920, Leo Michael has married Effie Turner, but is not enumerated in the household with her until 1930."

THE PASSING OF A PIONEER
Submitted by William T. Carter, 3rd great -grandson of Joseph Johns
Obituary as it appeared in "The Drew County Advance, Monticello, Arkansas, Tuesday, 2 6 Jun 1900, Page 2, Column 6."
Mr. Joseph Johns of this City Expired Tuesday Night at the Age Of Ninety-Two.
INTERRED AT ANDREWS CHAPEL
Mr. Joseph Johns died at his home in this city last Tuesday night at the age of ninetytwo. Interment at Andrews Chapel nine miles west of this place Wednesday morning.
Thus ended an eventful life. Joseph Johns was born in South Carolina
in 1808 and lived in that State until he reached manhood. His youth was cheerless and full of unrequited toil. On becoming "of age," he went to Alabama, where he was captured and held prisoner by the Creek Indians. At the commencement of the Seminole war ofthe Thirties, in which the Creeks figured more or less, he escaped and joined the army of Gen. Scott which was going to the relief of Florida settlers who were being massacred by Osceola and his Seminole warriors. Afterward he fought under Gen. Jesup and (then) Col. Zachary Taylor, and took part in some of the bloodiest battles of that bloody period. He was one of a party that killed a noted Seminole chief whose death, it is said, was a potent factor in forcing Osceola to begin peace negotiations.
After the death of Osceola in Fort Moultrie and the Seminoles were sent West, Mr. Johns returned to Alabama. Moving to Texas, he remained there a few months and returned to Alabama. Later he moved to Louisiana, and from there to Arkansas, settling in Ashley county in 1856. After living there two years he moved to Calhoun
178
county, and from there to Drew county in 1870, settling at Barkada near where he now lies buried. Later he moved to this city where he resided until his death.
Mr. Johns made no pretentions to learning nor religion, but followed to the last hour his creed of Honesty, Truthfulness and Charity. His promises were fulfilled as surely as they were made, and he probably gave more liberally of his means to purposes of charity than any other man of similar fortune in this city. Whatever of good he may have done was not announced from the house tops nor heralded with trumpet and triangle, and it is probable that many recipients of his bounty knew not whom to thank for their good fortune. On one occasion he ordered a supply of groceries sent to a distressed family, and the grateful beneficiaries suppose to this day that the food was sent by the Ladies' Aid Society. The local papers mentioned the occurrence, and gave the Society credit for the kind act, greatly to the old gentleman's amusement.
Those farmers of small caliber who could not secure needed supplies from other sources for lack of security, rarely went to Mr. Johns and came away in disappointment. By these his loss will be felt keenly and it will be many a day before another comes to fill his place.

Seaborn D. Reese Obituary
Submitted. by Mary Allen Brown
Taken from THE HEADLIGHT Sheridan, Arkansas, Thursday, September 19, 1895
IN MEMORIAM
Seaborn D. Reese, one of the oldest and most popular men in the county, died at his home in Sheridan, Saturday. He was born in Wilkerson County, Georgia, July 22, 1821, and was therefore in his 75'" year. His mother died when he was about 5 or 6 years of age and his father soon followed------*------whom he lived with until about his 15" year when his uncle was killed in some Indian trouble. At this early age the subject of this sketch unaided and alone commenced the battles oflife. He entered the schoolroom as a teacher at this early age and when he could not distinguish p from q, and by hard study prepared himself to teach those entrusted to his care. For about 20 years he devoted his time and talents to teaching, teaching in Georgia and this state to which he removed many long years ago. In 1847 he was married to Celia J. Deans and for more than 48 years, they toiled side by side and together they fought their way through long years of trial and aillictions. He was the father of nine children, seven of whom survive him. When the clouds of war hung heavy over this fair land of ours, he shouldered his gun and fought for his home and friends. Under the ministry of Rev. J. M. Ferguson about thirty years ago, he professed religion and joined the Methodist E. Church, South, and from that time to the day of his death he was a great lover of its doctrines and polity(sic). He filled all demands made upon him by church or state.
Since the erection of the Methodist church in this place, he has been forward at all times in maintaining it and by his liberal gifts the church has ---*----he has been steward in this church since our removal to this place. For ten years Squire S. D. Reese was Sheriff and collector of this county and retired from office at his own will. He was mayor of Sheridan at the time of his death. During his incumbency of the Sheriffs office we never knew a more popular officer and when he retired from it his friends could be counted by the hundreds and were bound to him by hooks of steel.
Squire Reese will be sadly missed in Sheridan. He had accumulated a moderate fortune for these times and used it in acts of benevolence and charity. After a funeral sermon at the Methodist church by Rev. W. W. Mills, he was buried Sunday, about noon at the graveyard in this town, by the Masonic fraternity of which he had long been a serious member in the presence of the largest gathering we have ever seen on a similar occasion in this county.
To his grief stricken wife and children, we join their many friends in sympathy.

miles north of Mt. Vernon. He has never traveled farther than 75 miles from his home and has never tasted liquor, used tobacco or drunk coffee or even a coke. Mr. Hawkins was born April 3, 1868, the son ofBrehon and Lottie Gray Hawkins who came from Tennessee and settled here in the 1840s. He has served as road overseer, school director and for 40 years was a deacon in Bethany Baptist church.
John 1. Connor of Greenbrier is another native and lifelong citizen of Faulkner county, who was here before the county was formed. He was born six miles east of Greenbrier, December 19, 1871, a son of James W. and Gracie Simons Connor. The former came from Tennessee and the latter from Kentucky, before the civil war, and Mr. Connor's father served in the Confederate army. Mr. Connor did not marry until July 3, 1927, when he was 55 years old. His wife the former Lillie Kirby, is a daughter of Joe and Laura Kirby of Greenbrier. They have no children. Mr. Connor is still active in his lifelong pursuit, the carpenter's trade.
Brief data on two "charter" citizens were sent to the Log Cabin Democrat by its Woodrow correspondent, Mrs. G. W. Jones: "Bease Williams, 87 years of age, is native of this county, where he was born August
19, 1860, and has lived all his life. He is a son of James and Sarah Williams. Mrs. Mattie Williams, 79, was born November 19, 1868, the daughter of William and Emily Jones, and has remained in Faulkner county all her life."
William Zachariah Smith of Conway was born in the Union Valley community near Enola January 16, 1870 and is a lifelong citizen of Faulkner county. He is a son of David and Sarah Brooks Smith. He has no children, but has two sisters and four brothers, one of whom, Mrs. IN. Matthews, is the Log Cabin Democrat's Enola correspondent.

A. J. Mine Personnel Index +/-1914-1944 A. J. Closure (with some beyond 1944) [Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company and its Holdings] & Partial Index of Alaska Gastineau & Perseverance Mine Personnel. Index by Gastineau Genealogical Society in conjunction with Alaska State Library, Historical Collections Staff 466 pp. Order from Juneau-Douglas City Museum, 155 South Seward Street, Juneau, Alaska 99801. Price probably about $13. Email [emailprotected] for exact price, or call 907-586-3572.
This CD contains a series of indexes that document people who worked, and sometimes died, in several mines in the area of Juneau, Alaska, in the early twentieth century. It was produced in Microsoft Word and consequently is immediately usable by a large number of computer users.
The Alaska Juneau mineworkers index contains 11,458 names, 58 of which show a birthplace of Arkansas. A Supplemental Index to Fatal Accidents/Deaths contains 203 names, some of which are also in the first index. An additional partial index of persons who worked III the Alaska Gastineau Mine and Perseverance Mine 1917-1921 contains an additional 731 names.
The CD opens up in a page of icons that provide access to the different parts of the database. A Contents page provides the icon code descriptions. The Introduction to the A. J. Index includes Family History Library fi 1m numbers of Juneau funeral home records. An Appendix to the Introduction contains an application for a search of Juneau funeral records, abbreviations, codes, and footnotes.
The Alaska Juneau personnel index is searchable in four different sorts: by
surname; given name; country, state and surname; and Soundex code and surname. Information includes the State Historical Library location of the person's file; the full name; date of birth or age at hire date; birth country or state; spouse, parent, or other associated person; the kinds of records on file for that person; and his surname Soundex code. Death dates are provided for some workers. Among the Arkansas natives, the earliest birth noted was about 1860, and at least one death date was listed.
The Supplemental Index of Fatal Accident Deaths includes footnotes of sources on every page.
The Introduction to the Partial Index of Alaska Gastineau/Perseverance Mine Personnel 1917-1921 indicates the information was extracted from accident reports with additional information from funeral records. Persons who may be the same as in the other index are noted.
The Gastineau Index is available in a surname sort and a soundex/sumame sort.
A Mini Mine Glossary contains definitions of words like mucker and nipper.
The Gastineau Genealogical Society copyrighted the CD and provided reproduction rights to the Alaska State Historical Library, the Family History Library, and the Juneau Douglas City Museum.
If you have family members who may have gone to Alaska to work in a gold mine before 1945, you should take a look at this CD. It is a great example of a successful volunteer genealogical effort.

Certificate of Arkansas Ancestry
From the Arkansas Genealoeical Society. P. O. Box 17653. Little Rock. AR 72222
Do you have ancestors who would qualify for ancestry in Arkansas? AGS has certificates in four different categories of residency. In which category does your ancestor belong? It requires a little research to acquire a certificate giving recognition to your family's pioneers and settlers of Arkansas. The categories are:
Colonial This certificate is for an ancestor who resided in Arkansas prior to January 1, 1804.
Territorial This certificate is for an ancestor who resided in Arkansas prior to June 15, 1836.
Antebellum This certificate is for an ancestor who resided in Arkansas prior to May 6, 1861.
Nineteenth Century This certificate is for an ancestor who resided in Arkansas prior to December 31, 1900.
To prove ancestry in Arkansas, a lineage of the direct ancestor must be submitted to AGS, along with source documents to prove these facts. A family group sheet of the ancestor who resided in Arkansas must be completed with primary sources as proof. All sources must be cited, photocopied and submitted with the application. The citation must be easily searched for verification. Examples of acceptable documents include: census records, church or bible records, tax lists, court records, military records, land patents, deeds, newspaper items, etc. Send copies, not originals, since they will not be returned. Periodically, the applications are filmed by the Arkansas History Commission and State Archives, where they may be accessed through the Biographical Index.
